Can you put new construction windows in an existing home?
Replacement windows could still be used but new–construction windows are often more substantial and will not reduce your view. Because replacement windows fit inside the existing window frame you end up with less glass, therefore a smaller view.

Should you spray foam around windows?
Sealing around windows and doors is one of the most common uses for expanding foam. But the high-expansion stuff can actually push the jamb inward, making them impossible to open. Avoid this by using minimal expanding foam. It’s formulated to fill the space around windows and doors without excess expansion.
Using rubberized flashing tape, flash the base of the window rough opening from the window frame down over the WRB. Make sure that the piece of flashing tape is 6 to 8 inches longer than the bottom of the window rough opening.
How do you measure for new construction windows?
- Measure the height from the head of the window (top fixed-frame piece) to the windowsill (bottom fixed-frame piece)
- As with the width, take three measurements: down the left side, right side and the middle.
- Record the shortest measurement — this ensures that the new window will fit.
