Can you turn a fence panel into a gate?
A prefabricated gate can be one of the most expensive parts of your wood fence. Fortunately, you can use an extra fence panel to build your own custom gate for a fraction of the cost. Wood fence is easy to cut and alter, so creating a gate out of the fence is actually fairly simple.
How much smaller should a fence gate be than the opening?
You will want to make your gate 1 to 1-1/2 inches smaller than the opening to allow for swing and hardware.

The easiest way to reinforce a gate is to attach a diagonal brace or tension rod connecting one of the hinges to the corner opposite. This equalizes the tension between each side of the gate.
